Michael Grandage will return to the National Theatre in February for the first time since 2010 to direct Emma Corrin and Harriet Walter in a new production of Tennessee Williams’ rarely performed masterpiece Suddenly Last Summer.
A family united by grief, divided by truth.
Violet Venable is determined to protect the reputation of her late son Sebastian – but her niece Catharine has a different story about what happened last summer.
When Catharine’s memories are challenged, it falls to a young doctor to decide whose version of events to believe.
A haunting tale of family, trauma and competing truths, Suddenly Last Summer is one of Tennessee Williams’ most gripping plays.

The Great Indaba | Autumn 2027
Produced by the National Theatre in a co-production with MGC, National Theatre Director Indhu Rubasingham (The Jungle Book) will direct The Great Indaba by Moira Buffini (Handbagged).
How do two warring factions ever find a path to peace?
The Great Indaba dramatises how the 1998 Good Friday Agreement took a big step forward at an extraordinary meeting in South Africa between the new National Unity Government led by Nelson Mandela and the bitter political rivals within Northern Ireland.
This inspirational true story of diplomacy gives hope to the idea that peace can always be achieved even in the greatest areas of conflict.

We're delighted to announce that the MGC production of Red by John Logan is available to stream via National Theatre at Home. Directed by Michael Grandage, starring Alfred Molina as Mark Rothko and Alfred Enoch as his assistant, Ken, the production was filmed live during its 2018 West End run at Wyndham's Theatre.
